What are the Benefits of a Remote Internship?

Top 3 Benefits of a Remote Internship

  1. Self-Starter - For us, this is the number 1 benefit you will get out of a remote internship. Go on any job site right now, identify a job that you would like to have in the future. What you will see in the Profile Requirements things like self-starter, independent, go-getter, etc. This was the case even before Covid-19, but now we see it everywhere as companies have adjusted to the ever-changing environment. We have even seen in some cases 'need to have remote experience'. Oh, how things have changed. How does one prove they are a self-starter? Well, a successful remote internship (preferably in another country) will prove just that. Future employers will be able to tell with a successful remote experience that you're a self-starter and don't need to be supervised at all times. It's also a great opportunity for you to see if you're capable of working when not in a working environment. Let's be honest, some people are not able to. P.S - try to get a recommendation letter or a reference so you can use this as proof of a successful remote internship.
  2. Flexibility - I think one thing Covid-19 has taught the world (certainly us) that the ability to be felxible is an extreme benifit for not only a company but for everyone.  When something out of your control comes your way, this is where you see if you're capable to adjust and move forward and not stay stuck.  If your goal is to have an internship abroad or an international experience, well then a remote internship during these times will show that you weFlexibility - I think one thing Covid-19 has taught the world (certainly us) that the ability to be flexible is an extreme benefit for not only a company but for most people personally. If your goal is to have an internship abroad or an international experience, well then a remote internship abroad during these times will show that you were able to achieve your goal by using flexibility and a bit of adjustment to get there. I think even here at Clic'n Clac we first said, what we do is promote on-site internships abroad and the benefits that they give you. Using some flexibility in the way we think we were able to see that having a remote internship can still give you the benefits of an internship abroad from your own home. You will be able to see a different type of work cultures, interact with international employees, create an international network, improve your language skills, and gain hard skills for your future. What is missing is the physical interaction, but given the ever-changing situation who knows, you could start your internship remotely and finish by actually going on site.re able to achieve your goal by using flexibility and a bit of adjustment to get there.  I think even Clic'n Clac at first said, well what we do is promote internships abroad and the benifits that they give you.  Using some flexibility we were able to see that having a remote internship can still give you the benifits of an internship abroad from your own home.  You will be able to see a diffrent type of work culture, interact with internationl employees, create an international network, and gain skills.  What is missing is obviously the physical interaction, but given the ever changing situation who knows, you could start you internship remotley and finish by actually going on site.
  3. Freedom - Let's not lie, the freedom of a remote internship is a huge benefit. Nobody counting your hours, making sure you show up on time, or standing over your shoulder making sure your work gets done. Especially if it's a remote internship where your home company is in a completely different time zone, you could even be working during the hours your other colleagues are sleeping. What it means and what companies understand now is that results or more important than hours. Don't abuse this! This is a stellar opportunity to put on your CV 'Self-Starter' and 'Flexible', but at the end of the day, it's you who decides your hours. You can work during the times that work best for you, and that can change each day. Maybe you want to eat with your girlfriend/boyfriend, your mother, or whomever - well that would be possible with a remote internship. You can even work harder to take an extra day off. At the end of the day, with remote internships, it's your results that count!

Make the best of your Remote Internship

Follow this advice to make the best out of your Remote Internship!

Your Set-Up

Before you start you need to make sure your set-up is perfect for two reasons: for you personally and for your employer. Don't work in your bed. Common, you're better than that. Make your work environment just that, your work environment. Like this, you can distinguish the rest of your house with your work environment. Don't forget to include things that make you feel good: plants, motivation pictures, fan, etc. For your future employer, make sure you have the tools needed to succeed: internet connection, email, webcam, etc.

Organisation and workflow

Beforehand you will have to give thought to your working hours. As mentioned above you have some freedom with remote internships, but be sure to ask your boss what hours meetings will be. You should always remember to take breaks to maximize productivity. Again, at the end of the day, this is what your future employer will be looking for in your remote internship: productivity and results.

Feedback!

One of the fallbacks we can see with a remote internship is how you learn new skills. It could be a bit more challenging to have someone show you how to do something or use a certain tool. Companies are adjusting to this remote atmosphere, thus how employees and interns learn will adjust with it but for the time being, ask for Feedback. It is always important to ask for feedback, but even more so in a remote atmosphere. This way you can have immediate feedback on how you're tackling a project or using a tool. Don't be afraid to ask an employee to give you some web-time to walk you through a certain project or task. Asking for regular feedback will show your manager that you're genuinely interested and want to grow.

Motivation!

In any setting, Clic'n Clac would recommend showing initiative and motivation. Why we mention it here is because we know that being in a remote atmosphere can easily play with your motivation. I mean, again, nobody watching you so technically you can do whatever. Wrong! Make the most out of this experience, and staying disciplined and motivated will be a real asset for you and your future. Showing initiative, motivation, and discipline will give you the most out of this remote internship experience and nothing but value. You never know what will be around the corner of this experience, so make a good impression!
